Feng Shui for Your Home Office

I don’t think I need to state this, but, I am no expert in Feng Shui! I do, however, have a growing fascination with this ancient practice. Since childhood I’ve moved objects around my space to change the way I felt, this habit would at times drive flat mates mad, but as I read and learn more about Feng Sui, I wonder, was there some method to my madness?

The practice of Feng Shui is used to create harmony between a person and their environment, creating time and space for a more productive, balanced existence.

As more of us are envisioning a future where we work from home, at least part time, it would be a good idea to design our space so that we can get the most out of our environment.

Here is some simple Feng Shui to help you enhance your productivity:

  1. Declutter!

Keeping the space around you clear and tidy means that you can locate things easily. It is also pleasing to the eye, as a lot of clutter can be visually stimulating and distracting. Having papers everywhere can also send a signal to the brain that there is lots to do, which can subconsciously stress and bog down the mind.

  2. Face the Door

If possible it is best to position your desk so that you are facing the door. It is important to be able to see the space around you and the entrance, so that you can feel calm, prepared and in control. This may sound excessive, seeing as you are not preparing for war, but psychologically being able to see who is coming in will allow you to feel more relaxed. If this is not possible you can always place a mirror in front of you so that you have a view of the door.

  3. Lighting is Key

Natural light is best for concentration and focus, however, if this is not possible choose a light bulb that mimics this. Avoid fluorescent strip lights as these can send confusing messages to the brain and can trigger migraines. If you have little natural light; use mirrors to help enhance the light and expand the sense of space around you.

  4. Bring life into Your Office

Plants are not only beautiful to look at but they are also known to bring about a sense of relaxation. The different shades of green found in nature help to calm the mind and nervous system. Try to bring a variety of plants into your work space so that you can bring a sense of the natural world within.

  5. Positive symbols

Surround yourself with pictures and objects that make you feel good. These could be pictures of your family, inspiring paintings or pleasing ornaments, but remember, keep things simple; you don’t want your positive symbols to become clutter!
